What is Kenswitch?

Kenswitch is a registered limited company that was set up by a consortium of banks to provide to the financial community a shared ATM infrastructure so as to facilitate the use of debit cards for the bank’s customers. The Kenswitch ATM network is actually a collection of various ATMs of these banks. Currently  these ATMs are distributed in 50 towns around Kanya and there are over 2000 POS terminals.

  1. What is POS ?

POS is Point-Of-Sale. It is a facility by which you can pay, using your Guardian Bank ATM/POS card, for items purchased from selected shops/supermarkets. POS is a form of a debit card.

 

  1. Types of POS transactions

The card can be used in shops/supermarkets supporting two networks; KCB and Senator.

 

i) KCB based POS transactions

Can take place at the till of the supermarket. For authorization your signature and proof of ID is required. You can also use the KCB POS unit at the customer care point in supermarkets such as Nakumatt and Tuskys (there are two similar KCB POS units at the customer care desk but ensure you instruct the usage of the non-VISA unit)

 

ii) Senator based POS transactions

Senator POS machines are mainly available at the customer care desk. For transacting on these, you have to specify the account type (savings (default)/current) and you must also specify your card’s PIN number for authorization.

 

  1. What are the charges and costing

i) ATM

Guardian Bank will charge KShs. 35 per cash withdrawal. The charges will be directly debited from the respective customer’s account.

            ii) POS

Customers are not charged for this service and are only debited for the amount  they make a purchase of..

 

(The amount limit of transactions allowed both for ATM and POS transactions combined is Khs. 25,000 daily)

 

  1. What transactions can be done at the ATMs?

This is dependant on the type of ATM you use. But the most basic services supported in all ATMs are balance query and cash withdrawal. In some ATMs you can also change your pin number and get your mini-statement.
